2012 Move, New Offerings and information on reopening

Many Thanks to all who have been part of the Gallery 141 venture of ten years, hundreds of artist collaborations, tens of thousands of visitors and two locations. Bringing art to Lancaster, and working with such wonderful people has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. Here is a look at our next home which has been in the planning ever since a year after we opened in the Duke Street Location. We can't think of a nicer person and more wonderful artist than Christiane David, who bought the 113 Water/112 Prince St. Building and will be moving her clothing store into our old space. Thanksgiving weekend we moved our things to storage, and will work with the Buchanan Park Association to do the necessary repairs to get the Inkling INSTITUTE up and running. This new venture of 141 will still host First Friday and Artwalk Weekend events, exhibitions and music and dance events. AND as Inkling INSTITUTE it will also be a studio space for me, training ground for interns and aspiring artists, and SUMMER camps and College Student and Adult Education classes. Take a look at blog: GlenEchoYurt.blogspot.com to see the programs in action in the DC area. As Rick's retirement is on the horizon moving these classes and community creative adventures to Lancaster comes nearer to fruition. Just as the Yurt at Glen Echo Park, took a few years to ramp up to a full schedule, we expect the same with this space. We will participate in the Buchanan Park Festivals, and hold some pre-grand opening events on the grounds and will post them here and on Facebook for Alana, and for the Gallery as they are planned. We look forward to seeing you at our new home and Fall of 2012 looks to be a POSSIBLE date that the renovations may be completed.

Artist-in-Residency and Summer Camps

Buchanan Park Race Avenue, Behind Franklin and Marshall College

This little building originally sat on the Lancaster Square, and housed volunteers selling war bonds for WWI and WWII. It was moved to Buchanan Park and for a few years hosted summer camps and social dances. By the 70's it just held the Reynolds Football Team's equipment as a storage space. The joint effort to restore the camp to being an arts center has been going on since 2002, and the lead abatement paint job and some other building repairs and upgrades are left before we can open doors. If you have any ideas for companies that may be interested in offering special rates in exchange for promotional advertising, we would be grateful for those contacts. It resembles Independence hall because it was built to be in miniature version of the Lancaster Courthouse, which was a scaled down version of Independence Hall. Many people do not know, that the Lancaster Court House was for one day, the nations capitol, when a Revolutionary War battle came too close to Philadelphia. The Declaration of Indpendence and other founding documents were rushed to Lancaster by carriage and hid there for safekeeping. So it is extra fitting that our calligraphy, and manuscript making with be taking place in this historic building.

From Oct- Nov. 2011, a mother daughter show is being hosted at Gallery 141. Regina Barker- Barzel escaped from the USSR in 1972, and even though she has never gone back, her life experience of her youth shows through her paintings. There is a Slavic touch even in her Western European landscapes. Her daughter Veronica Barker- Barzel was born in DC, grew up in Europe and spent three years in Japan. Her degree was in English literature from UMUC. Mythological creatures will pop up in her urban style paintings. Veronica Barker- Barzel and Ried(another visiting artist) will be at the gallery for music Fri. and First Fri. Come see us!

Our Last date at the 113 N Water Street address will be the last day of November. We will be relocating to the little building on Race Street in Buchanan park that looks like Independence Hall. Our earliest reopening date will be Spring 2012. In the mean time, the vintage will be appearing at a local soon to open consignment shop...more details soon. Our beads and jewelry will be at Burning Bridge in Columbia PA, more details soon on that as well. And Alana's origami cards will be finding a new home as well soon. So don't worry, we will still be active even in the interim before we reopen. The new location will be called Inkling Institute!

Music Friday and First Friday events will be held there as we get up and rolling. IN THE MEAN TIME October Music Friday, November First and Music Friday will still be held at our 113 North Water Street location! JOIN US for some great times in our space.

Christiane, the new owner of our building will be moving her clothing business into our space. Indigo blues may continute with her there, though the details there are still being ironed out. (no pun intended :)

Dave Seyfried -artist in residence for August and September

Dave Seyfried is a resident of Lancaster city. He is an accomplished musician/singer and artist who has been working downtown and showing in galleries since 2001.

His story is one of survival and perseverance. He suffered life-altering injuries from a car accident in the spring of 1997. In that crash he flatlined for two and a half minutes, and even after he was resucitated he remained in a coma for two weeks. He had to learn to speak and walk again but also lost the use of his left hand,which was his dominant.

Though it was difficult, Dave through allot of "prayer and determination" has relearned to draw even better than before with his oposite hand. He has had far more work and showings post-accident.

"It's very difficult to take my art and music for granted now, I want to live everyday in a state of thanks"

Dave's subject matter varies from simple absurd and humorous characters, to iconic looking drawings that smack of 19th century woodcuts, to photo realistic and photo-surrealistic portraits.

He's also authored a graphic novel called "Ghastly Maytown" about an outbreak of sailboat-headed zombies in nearby Maytown,PA, drawn the familiar image of Lancaster's Steve Murray in front of his famous Zap&Co. vintage shop that is featured on a shirt sold downtown at various occasions, he also created the logo for "Senorita Burrita" on Prince St., and once created toy-sets for the K'nex toy company.

Dave's show consists of an exciting collection of originals and prints that are sure to please and are reasonably priced.Wait'll you see the giant framed piece of Dave depicted life-size as a version of Gulliver from Gulliver's Travels. breath-taking

Dave's second phase of his two month show begins Friday night at 5pm and goes till 10pm. Come early to meet Dave's dad Jim. Dave's band will play around 7pm (You Are The Research) with guests, including roommate Missy who's also a frequent subject of his drawings (come see the stunning piece of Missy in Penn Square Lancaster)

Dave will draw your caricature for 5 dollars that night, and his cd (Monarch) will be available for 10 dollars.

When I lived in India and Palestine, my family and friends in the U.S. asked me frequently, "When are you coming home?" On the flip side of the question, I had new friends telling me to never leave. Working as an educator, wandering as a photographer, and inquiring as a scholar of life, I met scores of people whose smiles, generosity, sense of humor, and customs beckoned me to stay a while. These portraits highlight a few of them.

Coming to the Listening Room soon, Bread for Ducks, in the manner of The Moldy Peaches, is so full of heart and authentic, I am sure their loyal following will continue to grow. I am really hoping our dear beloved video volunteer will come this week to post them on the website for posterity. They make me smile, and I am always reminded of some very important little particle in the heart we can sometimes forget, if you know what I mean, when I see them play.

We have invited Kristie Lou Brigham to bring some clay or any items she is willing to bring out for us...we will be so happy to see her new work and her too! whenever she is able to come out. She is a good blog poster so she may give us some notice or just surprise us when the mood hits and opportunity allows.

After four years and many setbacks our persistance is finally looking like it will carry Rick and I through this house project in Arlington. If any interest Ourflyinghouse.blogspot.com shows we are nearing completion at long last! The flying house refers to that we had Scott Paden's design built in a factory, then craned in in six sturdy parts to form the two and half story structure. THAT was the easy part. What came after has been quite a challenge.

As images of resistance movements across the Middle East and North Africa capture global audiences, Millersville native Kara Newhouse brings Lancaster a view into political and cultural resistance that Palestinians have sustained for decades in the face of Israeli occupation, colonization and apartheid.

In February 2010 Kara traveled to the West Bank to teach art to children at a community organization in Nablus. The generosity and strength of the Palestinian friends she made motivated Kara to spend the summer of 2010 documenting life under occupation as an online reporter and photographer. As Palestinians continue to hold weekly nonviolent protests calling for an end to house demolitions, settlement expansion and construction of the illegal separation wall, Eyes on Resistance captures the courage and passion of those resistant Palestinians as well as Israeli and international activists standing up against injustice.

A self-trained photographer with a background in cultural anthropology, Kara's work as a journalist and youth educator has led her to the Middle East, Central America, and most recently, India. Her writing and photography can also be found at Rogue Anthropologist.

Mixed media Artist and Poet, Loryn Spangler-Jones brings us with her, articulating her meaningful and explosive journey of discovery and growth. Her show brings us together in that place where souls meet. The varied paintings blend, stitch, layer and reveal. The poetry is frank and by grasping the hurdles that stand in her way, she reaches out, pulling herself and us into a new landscape where movement is unrestricted and free. She pauses between lines, as if to invite us to insert our thoughts and desires into that space she creates. In her case, mixed media not only refers to her array of processes and materials she combines to relay her discoveries in her art. My first shows as a fine art photographer were in DC at the semi-annual non juried Artomatic exhibition. The Washington DC Commission on Arts and Humanities purchased five of my photos as part of their Art Bank program. Encouraged by my early success I continued to participate in Artomatic.

Ken Vallario is an artist from New Paltz, NY. His work has shown in New York, Philadelphia and throughout the Northeast. His work is an eclectic attempt to take the fractured elements of 20^th century modernism and recombine them to form a constructive dynamic style suitable for our 21st century ambitions. Ours is an age of deep complexity. Vallario responds to this complexity by attempting to re-imagine the centrality of the human being in a cosmos that gets more and more illusive with every advance in knowledge. The struggle for identity and meaning in a world of parallel universes and post-modern deconstruction signals for Ken Vallario that the act of painting has become the highest form of philosophy. As the anxiety of influence increases every day so does the need to transcend this with an alchemical breakthrough. Commitment to humanity and an optimism about the future drives these works, as does a desire for honest one of a kind works, that stand alone, as fully developed expressive works. Some of his more recent works like the one above, The Heart of Markets, are accompanied by essays that delve more deeply into his philosophy of 21^st century art-making. He uses the painting signature "Gabriel" as a dedication to the enduring affects of his Italian grandfather (Gabriel Bottini) on his interest in nature and appreciation of the world around him. His landscapes are signed Gabriel with David's signature on the back of each work. A World Behind Glass

Christie Twigg, owner of Forever Green, has her own definition of terrarium. For the month of August these miniature worlds created in re-purposed glassware have graced a high top in the gallery. Each piece is unique and offers a serene escape from the daily grind of a fast paced city life.

After ten years of working in the horticulture industry, Christie ventured into her own business last October. "Terrariums are my artistic release, although gardening for many is an artistic expression in it's own right." She is hoping that her terrariums are seen as such and is working toward the goal of owning a shop in the near future.

As Joni Mitchell sings “We can't return we can only look behind from where we came” and it is that glance back to where he came that enlivens and engages David Bottini’s dreamlike landscapes. His crystalline focus and saturated palette draw a viewer into a place that arouses a specific memory and time for each viewer. This group of paintings evokes the power of memories; where you look and are entranced, where your sharp-focus memory of a past time merges with the paint and canvas in your immediate view.

David Bottini’s grouping of “Seasons and Light” paintings are on exhibit at Gallery 141 on Water Street in downtown Lancaster.

Before dedicating his full time to his studio work, Bottini earned the title of “Master Teacher” during his tenure as Visual Art Department Chair at the Madeira School in McLean, Virginia.

Mr. Bottini's work projects his passion for landscape and atmospheric effect, as inspired by his Italian grandfather, Gabriel, from whom the artist derived his painting signature. David’s classic realism is honed in a focused studio process and his goal of capturing a specific moment of solitude within nature aligns his approach within the Romantic tradition.

This VIDEO is THE BIG DIRTY from their last performance at 141. We have them penciled in for to kick off our Artwalk Weekend music festival. MUSIC FRIDAY April 16th, 7pm. There may be some fun twists to this event yet to be announced involving a local children's organization and a certain neighbor to the gallery who loves this band about as much as we do!!! We will keep you posted as things come together. Artwalk is a GO and we hope to have some fun outdoor music and art aspects to our event. Also more to come!

Richard Kaufman Artist Statement

In my paintings, I combine the precepts and techniques of East Asian brush painting, referred to in Japan as sumi-e, and Western art. Making a modest contribution to the bridging of East and West cultures in this medium is one of my goals.

I use "rice" papers, of which there are many types, brushes with natural fibers, Chinese and Japanese inks, and watercolors to depict scenes from the natural world. Chinese calligraphy in seals or "chops" and in writing is used in this kind of painting for several reasons. In addition to the meaning of the characters and their poetic expression, calligraphy itself is an abstract art.

Although there is an eastern aura in my work, my subjects are mostly North American and drawn from my personal experience.

My ultimate goal is not so much exact representation as to capture the mood energy and life force of my subjects. In addition to their uniqueness and personality, I strive to show the harmony and beauty of all things in nature.

I am a member of the board of directors of the Sumi-e Society of America.

Tony Bonazzi and Carolynn Tucker's work are featured. Our favorite Funky band, THE BIG DIRTY put on a great performance outside with audience style seating.

The next few MUSIC FRIDAYS starting in September will be very special. Gallery 141 presents "The Listening Room", hosted by Jason Mundok with a bit of a Later with Jules Holland kind of set up ( up to three performers per night including Jason). We will be experimenting with the Listening room idea and working out how to bring Lancaster music that musicians and music lovers can appreciate in an environment that is intimate and ideal. We will have seating for all three of these events and we will have a donation which will be given to the musicians. It will conclude with a wine reception with the artists.

John and Kimberly Sanderson found an office space a few blocks from home in Strasburg but they will still be hanging with us for First Fridays with the photo booth, and artists will still be able to make prints with John's new fab printer...on canvas, paper and even other wild options! And you can still pick up their info at the gallery to share with friends about to take the plunge

Hello everyone! We are finally having the wonderful "Spring" weather we deserve after our mini monsoon season. And with this, comes a new garden in our patio area. I will be outside the gallery today working under the tree, fighting the ivy, and finding new homes for plants that I am transplanting from my own back yard.

Be sure to stop by and see the progress - I'm hoping this summer's garden will be filled with flowers, music, and good people!

Gallery 141's latest featured artist is Carolynn S. Tucker. She is a graduate of Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD with her Bachelor's Degree in 2-D Studio Art. Tucker grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and has fairly recently moved to Lancaster County. Her debut show is titled, "Rough Around the Edges". It is a mixture of acrylic paintings on wood and pencil drawings. The subject matter is very whimsical and colorful. Big, bold eyes are the focal point on the faces of the wooden stars. Carolynn says, " The work really touches on my emotions and expression. I use my art as a way to 'overcome negativity' in my life and vent my feelings. I hope that each individual can get something from these works. This is my dream, for my art to be shared and to even possibly INSPIRE others".

First Friday 5/1/09 was the grand opening.

Hello everyone!
It's Kerri again from Beadworks by Kerri. Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Just wanted to stress that anyone who missed May's First Friday missed out on a very good time. The Big Dirty provided music and they were fantastic. A very improvisational jazz band. I'm sure you'll be seeing more of them at future Gallery 141 events. We also had a delicious batch of chili made by Randy which was enjoyed by all those who were lucky enough to get some. And, of course, a sampling of different wines brought by participating artists. Carolynn, the gallery's newest addition started her exhibit with some very beautiful and sensual artwork.

Hi everyone!
My name is Kerri aka Beadworks by Kerri and I'll be joining the Gallery 141 artist collective April 1st. I'm really excited to be included. My life long love affair with arts and crafts began when, as a young girl, my grandmother taught me how to crochet. Ever since, I'm happiest when my hands are creating something. Through my journey as an artist I have tried and enjoyed many crafts, including crochet, knitting (never quite got the hang of it), sewing, macrame, needlepoint, cross stitch, you name it. Sometimes I would have 4 or 5 projects going at the same time across several mediums. It wasn't until my older sister Cindy taught me how to make my first pair of earrings that I became focused on one craft. Almost immediately I became addicted to beads and for those of you who are also confessed beadaholics, you know what I mean. There's a certain feeling or spirituality that comes from running your fingers around and across a nicely shaped stone. The colors are fascinating and the variety is endless. As with many forms of art, you are only limited by your own imagination. So, please come down to the gallery to see my collection of jewelry or just to chat. I'll be there Tuesday through Thursday most weeks and, of course, First Fridays. Be sure to check out my blog!

What else is there to do at 3AM - but see what else is going on at Gallery 141?!? And then to continue on to see who else knows Gallery 141...and so on...till you end up back at your own page at 7AM, dead tired, and confused as to how you are 6 degrees of separation from yourself.

JC Fetlock is one of my favorite musicians and for that matter writer, and artists as well. He is a great friend of 141 and in '06 held an exhibition at the gallery of his beautiful hand-carved and painted walking sticks, each one custom made, incorporating the story and chakra positions of those for whom they are created. He also wrote and published a book Flicker, and his many artistic endeavors all incorporate his love of nature, humanity and spirit. The latest are his hand-printed, colorful "love bomb" tee shirts sold out well before valentines day. He brands his artistic endeavors under the universally conscious phrase, Made on earth. He was OFF the charts that evening with a performance that layered his many instruments and voice. The Gallery 141 Christmas party merges with a listening room Music Friday. Two acoustic acts will be our 6 thirty and 7 thirty performances. When we heard The Big Dirty we couldn't wait to book them for a gig at the gallery. December was our date and they did not disappoint. They chose to rock it in the courtyard and it was great! Iron Hill provided three varieties of home brew: India Pale Ale, Vienna, and Saison. We want to get the word out that they are another great place to go after First Friday venues are closed for dinner and a brew. They serve dinner til eleven and a bar menu til one am. Nancy Conlon brought her amazingly priced and wimsical lamp glass arts including tiny christmas trees and lots of ornaments including snow men, balls and beautiful icicles. Kristie was on hand with more of her hand made items...check out her ebay store...Sculptured Windows! Ben and Kaylin were our featured artists and they brought new work as always yet again stunning. Sanderson Images had the photo booth running. You gotta try this some time. You take your own photos of yourselves...individuals, couples, groups. You go on line and if you love it you can buy it to support charity and if not, have a laugh, and zap it to oblivion with the touch of a finger! This was a great fun First Friday in spite of a late start and bitter cold.

BIG Weekend at the gallery kicks off Music Friday

MUSIC FRIDAY...6-7pm Bill McConnely, 7-8 JC Fetlock and 8-9 Tristan Chord. We are making our first attempt at creating a real listening room environment for musicians. We are still very much there to serve our customers, we just want to do everything we can with this new Music Friday opportunity to give musicians what the crave, a space to be really heard and perform. The show will be indoors unless the musicians choose to be outside and either way we will have seating for guests. So come on down and support your local musicians. If not Friday, then
ARTWALK...Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 12-5. Networking for our musicians

This last First Friday (September) was the first time in a long time, maybe ever, that I had a chance to spend a lot of time outside listening to our musicians. It was really great actually and it gave me an idea. We are focusing on getting our musical talent hooked up with WXPN for their local music show and with our new gallery artists in residence, Sanderson Images (wedding photography elevated to the level of fine art), it seems to me that some networking there would be a good idea. Folks getting married are also trying to find the perfect match musically for their events. What if we try to get just a few minutes of film on our musicians and post them on the blog so we can help promote them.

Helmuth Humphrey, October 07 featured artist, called with news that the video he made of Kate McDevitt, our yoga guru girl, doing her Boutoh dance at his First Friday is now up on the Joost.com website. It is called Subconscious Soul and can be found in the Floating Worlds area. It is worth checking out and really quite beautiful. Two DVDs of Helmuths work also on Joost, and archival quality matted prints of stills are displayed in the gallery for sale.

Suzanne Brindamour is working to organize the footage from the pilot shot at the July 18 Music Friday to be our video offering this October First Friday. We love to feature film events in the fall so tell your filmaker friends there is an opportunity to show their work to a large crowd at 141. There will be some more footage from another documentary by the producer. We will give you more info on this as it develops. We hear that the event was covered by the Lancaster Paper Happenings section after the 18th. We are still seeking a copy of this coverage for our archive of media and to share with Suzanne. Can you help? We are offering a free pen for every copy you can give us! Choose from our Live Your Dream pens and our new blog pens handed out at the August First Friday.

FOURTH CELEBRATION: We are OPEN for First Friday July 4th, 6-9pm (Not open 10-4) with music from Child Nouveau and the art of James Dupree. Here is the story on Fireworks that night. The fireworks will be following the Barnstormers game at Clipper Stadium. There is no set time...just after the game. Usually it's between 9 and 10pm. Just hang out 'til you hear the first boom. The parking lot next to Neptune diner is a good viewing location for drivers and Arts Hotel is a great place to wait for the big booms with their exhibition and the bar to keep you entertained. Artshotel website can fill you in on the current exhibition. Come see our beautifications to our courtyard including peace garden and more of our huge umbrellas that keep it cool and comfortable.

Music Friday JULY 18th: This extra special Music Friday also features James and a wonderful Jewelry artist from EGYPT, Fatma and her beautiful creations. We also have Arlene Wartenberg's incredible knitted beaded amulet bags yet another month so if you missed them last month it is not too late to be blown away by these miniature works of art. Music includes some surprise guests and you will have an opportunity to be filmed as a guest and bystander for a high profile project "Troubadour" Hosted by singer/songwriter Suzanne Brindamour. The show is in development for PBS and travels the world in search of musical wonders. Regulars to First Fridays will remember her performances at the gallery last year. I predict music fridays will rival First Fridays if we all support this new way to express our arts together, so please do your part to make it a success!

JC Fetlock is planning some concerts in nature including tonight's (June 21) wolf sanctuary show at Speedwell Forge Road, and upcoming ones at Kelly's Run. They are fundraisers and sure to be a unique experience as musicians will be performing for you in splendid natural locations around the area. James Dupree Featured This First Friday

If you are coming from Philly or DC or anywhere for that matter coming by train can be a real pleasure. Especially for First Friday when the red carpet and some red wine will be rolled out for you. You can also take Peter Pan which arrives at the very same station as the train. We are less than a mile walk from the station. If you are staying overnight, I recommend the Arts Hotel where a reservation WILL be necessary. If they are full there is a Tavelodge about three blocks behind the station. It is not as nice but great price, and MUCH better accomodations than the overpriced and totally discombobulated Brunswick downtown.

When you arrive, walk out the front door and straight down Duke St. a few blocks. One block after the hospital, turn right at Smilies on Lemon St. The Belvedere Inn is on the next corner (Queen St). They make a wicked mohito and the food is great too. Ceasar Salad is one of their specialties. The 300 block of Queen has some fun and funky shops, Rachel's Creperie and Onions where they have Korean and diner food, and Lancaster's largest warehouse full of art Studios, The Kepel Building. Many studios will be open for First Friday. Also, next to Onions, duck back that alleyway to Building Character, a new business in town that will delight. Cut over to Prince St on Walnut St. Take a left on Prince St. The galleries will be popping all the way down to Orange St.. Walk around back of the A-Plus to Water St. and we will be there with Billy Penn Project and Jazz with Kallia to entertain you. Matt and Melissa will have their infused wines for you to sample inside. Cafe tables will be up in the parking lot.

Spring is the Best time to come out!

A bunch of things to share...
Milestones:
Cassie Tarr, our (now former) intern, dear friend and source of inspiration at the gallery has graduated PCAD and I have to admit I had a lump in my throat seeing it in person. Check out her work in the senior show at PCAD and her handmade bags at the gallery. She will not only be doing Project Funway wearable arts camp with me this summer but some gallery hours are in the works for her too so come meet her in person.

Art and Healing:
Jacques Abreau has returned with an exhibition of his art journey into spirit and healing. We are planning a special event 11 am Friday May 23 to introduce him, the director of the Chabot School for arts, to as large a group we can assemble of anyone who should know about their efforts to move forward the concept of making art and performance for the glory of God.

Alicia, massage therapist and healer, and sacred dancer, of Alicia's wellness has made sponsoring Jacques a part of her plan for mitzvah to bring herself and Jacques to the Tier One level of the gallery. See more of this in August and September with performance, more art and things yet undreamed of. She will also be doing some massage in the gallery in coming weeks and you can arrange to get one of those by calling 717-606-6659. It is as easy as that to turn the corner on a medical issue you may have or to just treat yourself to healing touch. She has worked wonders with a dear friend of mine, so I recommend her whole heartedly. Her new space is coming together in Millersville, so she is branching OUT like our Mulberry tree! On that note, thanks to Solly for helping me plant the new red birch in the courtyard!

PRINTS, Prints and more prints:
Kyle has only one piece in the gallery this month (his work is in the new tattoo shop just below the south east corner of King and Prince) but the exciting news is he is planning to have it taken to a print master who will scan in the original work to create a pure pigment print of it as soon as possible. A number of visitors expressed an interest in this piece. I will try to post the photo so graciously volunteered when I asked, by new gallery friend Russell G. Frost (check out his website Frost Imaging to see his gorgeous shots of all sorts of stuff you may have had no idea was going on in and around town).

It may take a tutorial or Kristie saving the day for that to happen as I have been blogging in my brain for months but couldn't get it to actually happen without a tutorial from Russell...who I can't seem to thank enough, but after this mammoth post Kristie (especially) may say, "it was better when you couldn't do it!

More on prints---also captured by Russell are the carousel prints which are now hanging in the Arts Hotel. P. Buckley Moss and I are (funny to see that in a sentence) donating $100.00 for each one sold to the Rocky Springs Carousel Association of which I am a member and I assure you we are really trying to get through the many hurdles to installing that work of art (Lancaster's re-acquired antique Dentzel Carousel) to the downtown in flux.

Shawn Younger, Featured Artist May 2008
-Newer ,Younger, Older and Better
Quite a few things to say about Shawn Younger's exhibition and reception first Friday. It was his birthday and the gift was for all of us! He presented his work beautifully and it was a real treat to have his family on hand to share the event. I especially loved seeing his son, Taj sketching in the gallery intently, in spite of all the hubbub around him. I was glad Shawn didn't take my advice to not necessarily bring them that night. I was wrong! And I should have known better because they are always great in the gallery. WHAT was I thinking! For goodness sake's I was an artist's kid and the best experiences of my childhood were being at art shows and doing stuff like that with my parents.

Look for an article on Shawn, in the paper very soon. The perfect time for him to get out from behind the presses making the papers for us to be in the paper showing the world the talents this young, but worldly, wise, and deep soul has to offer. You may not know that Shawn was a Marine and lived in San Diego for a long stretch... AND a huge shout out to his big sister who came all the way from Montana to see his show. Shawn's works are priced to sell and are a great example of why one should still buy art even when the economy is supposedly bad.

Miracles in small packages:
Arlene Wartenberg is back with her incredible knitted, beaded amulet bags and we now know she actually does make them and not magic fairies as it may appear. She demonstrated making them with needles that British Airlines deemed a terrorist threat! Mom would love those and the jewelry by Kirsten and Heidi too for that matter.

Blast from the PAST:
Big surprise and I nearly fell over when my high school chum Jenny's beautiful, bright eyed and poised daughter Carrie (now nearly the same age as Jen and I were when we hung out) showed up with her posse...all I can say is I can't wait to see all of them again and the apple paintings they made were off the charts for the paint y0ur own toy or bead box artbar activity. I LOVE it that High Schoolers are claiming First Friday for their own. Wish we had FF when I was at McCaskey!

Connections and Coming Soons:
Some great musical connections were made at First Friday and we made plans to bring you Jordan Rast's band, (we have copies of his CD for sale now) Jason and our faithful Fables, and some new talent Wendy and her hubby and Jazz from an angel with the wings to prove it...more on that and others later. Thanks everyone for supporting FF and local artists and remember us when Mother's Day gifts are on your mind!

Meet ZiZi Designs, featured Artist at Gallery 141

ZiZi Designs Jewelry began in early 2006 as a fun hobby among friends, and evolved into a fund raising endeavor to raise support for a friend serving as a missionary in the Middle East. Each piece of ZiZi jewelry is unique, handcrafted, beautiful, and fun ---and 100% of the proceeds raised are donated to missions around the world.

ZiZi Designs' vision began as a tiny seed planted many years ago in Kirsten, who spent 6 years polishing & cutting stones in a lapidary shop. Kirsten brings her talent, knowledge, and amazing artistry to ZiZi Designs. Kirsten has served as a missionary in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and combines her international experience and heart in each piece she creates.

Heidi joined ZiZi Designs as an understudy of sorts and has developed her own style of jewelry making. Heidi continues to join Kirsten in making jewelry to support an old friend who now serves with Eastern Mennonite Missions. She has a knack for fun & vibrant designs and a soft spirit which nourishes her elegant creations as well.

Meet featured Artist Kyle

Meet artist Kyle Stauffer, a featured artist at Gallery 141. Kyle's paintings will be on display and for sale at the gallery for the month of March. Kyle is a local Lancaster, PA artist who takes a surrealistic view on local landscapes. Kyle's exhibit is "Take the Hike Home."

The simplicity and complexity of natural line and color is captured on canvas and acrylic. His use of color is striking...my photos don't do these pieces justice!

Meet Jacques Abreu

Meet Jacques Abreu, one of this month's featured artists at Gallery 141. His faith inspired paintings will be on display, and available for sale, at Gallery 141 all month. Jacques has extensive experience in drama and performing arts. Though hard to believe when you see the detail and intricacy of his work, painting is a new found passion Jacques discovered only 2 years ago.

Jacques is an instructor at The Chabod Academy Of The Arts. "His adventure in the arts started at a young age while traveling around the world. At 14 he went on his first mission trip to Chile and found that people responded to the arts. Returning to Chile the following year, he was with a team that focused on drama. Jacques has sung in “Grease” and played different leading roles in “Joseph and the Technicolored Dream Coat,” “Celebrate,” and “David.” Jacques’ passion is to powerfully impact people’s lives with drama and use the arts to help spread the message of God’s love."

Thank you to all who ventured out in the rainy cold weather for First Friday last week. It was a great night! We moved fixtures to make room for everyone! Music, food, art, and good company made time fly... the perfect remedy for a rainy night!! Thank you to all who attended and helped out.

Our feature Artists for First Friday & the Month of March include paintings by Jacques Abreu and Beaded Jewelry by Megan McDonald. Both artists are full of life and creative energy that is contagious when you see their work!!

Jacque's faith inspired paintings are full of color, life, and and uplifting energy that is so inspiring! You can't help but be drawn into them, and feel his passion for life when you see his work! Megan's handmade beaded jewelry beckons you to wear it... she has a keen sense of color, textures, and functionality that makes her pieces irresistible.

Wednesday at Gallery 141

Sorry all, Wednesday at the gallery was a bust....we had an ice storm & torrential rain afterward. My morning was an hour of cracking & shoveling ice in the pouring rain. I was soaked to the bone & tired. Most schools & events were closed for the day, so I closed the gallery a bit early to dry off and get warm. Where is spring! The warm weather we had a couple weeks ago brought on a touch of spring fever!

To brighten the day, I had to include a little slice of artist Rob Kahn's vibrant & colorful work.

Hello! This is Kristie, one of the newer artists here at Gallery 141. I wanted to post an informal hello from the Gallery & and ME. I am the person who started this blog & I'm hoping Alana & some of our artists will join me in posting entries. So, come on everyone.... start typing... it doesn't have to be formal... just share a bit of yourself, your inspiration, your bio, or pictures of your art, or WHATEVER you like with the world!

Alana recently had surgery on her ankle... we're wishing her a fast recovery & I'm hoping she'll take some time to type a little... once the pain medicine wears off! She is always so full of energy and inspiration....so Alana, I'm challenging you to start typing! To our customers & fans, send us some comments!

Back to me for a minute... I joined the co-op at Gallery 141 in December 2007. The first time I entered Gallery 141 I was at home. I am new to the area, but fast becoming acquainted with the community & the many one way, confusing streets in Lancaster, PA! I have met so many artists, locals, & visitors and everyone has been so inspiring, friendly, and helpful. Moving here has been great, though I still mange to get lost now and then. Meet Gallery 141 Artist :Kristie-Lou Brigham

Kristie-Lou Brigham is a full time jewelry artist who recently relocated to Lancaster, PA. She is a graduate of the State University of NY, with a BS in Health Service Administration. Kristie-Lou is a self taught wire jewelry artist who has developed many of her own techniques & jewelry designs that are 100% handcrafted. They do not require the use of high-tech or dangerous tools or glues—all of her pieces are crafted with the skill of her hands and a few simple tools (ruler, pliers, & wire cutters).

Kristie worked in healthcare for 12 years before she discovered her calling as a jewelry artist. She embarked on a full time career in wire sculpture in 2005 as Sculpted Windows Jewelry. She has won several awards for her designs and they have been featured in Wire Jewelry Magazine-Summer 2007, Rings ’n Things Catalog 2007, and Fire Mountain Gems Catalog 2007-8. She specializes in wire wrapping, weaving, and sculpting and she enjoys traveling far-and-wide to find new crystal, gems, and stones to wrap. All of her jewelry is one-of-a-kind and features hand selected focal-pieces.

"I have treasured natural crystals, rocks, & gems as long as I can remember. I love organic gems, pieces that have not been altered to department store perfection, seeing stones in their natural crystalline state is breathtaking. When I discovered a way to create jewelry without the need for torches, solder, glue, or high-tech equipment, I was hooked. My passion is creating delicate appearing jewelry that is amazingly durable and leaves people baffled when they hear it has been HAND-made! And, once I start talking about the stones that inspired a particular design... I have a hard time stopping."
